Patient Handling / People Moving is defined as any transporting, transferring or supporting of a person (including the lifting, lowering, assisted sitting or standing, carrying or moving by hand or bodily force, and is essential training in the skill set of every Health Care Professional yet in Ireland over half of all reported cases of workplace related injury occur in the area of health & social care.
This Course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to provide effective patient care when moving people in the home or in the workplace in Compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Regulations 2007. The course is 90% practically based and provides hands on experience of the techniques necessary for moving people, based on sound biomechanical principles.
Helping people to move safely and with dignity is about understanding the mechanics of movement, and the changes and challenges this presents as people age and recover from illness or injury. Being able to do things for ourselves is a fundamental part of retaining our dignity.
Ever been in Hospital ? Ever felt what it’s like to not be able to do something for yourself ?
Brain says yes…….the body says No ! Sometimes we do not fully appreciate this until we lose it or have it impaired in some way as a result of a physical or medical condition.
People moving training then is not simply Manual Handling for people, or essentially ‘Manhandling people’. It’s not about physically manually moving things. It’s not about brute force.
This is about feelings this is about empowerment this is about enablement this is about dignity.
It’s about assisting, supporting, encouraging, facilitating, empathising and showing a level of understanding but at its most basic level it’s about care.
The principles of manual handling don’t really apply here, this is about the mechanics of human motion and assisting those humans who’s motion is no longer what it was that’s it plain and simple.
Certain medical states and conditions give rise to motor dysfunctions, it’s a matter of re learning or adapting to the new motor pattern. Sometimes a slight adjustment or change in position can provide the mechanical advantage necessary to facilitate that move. Biomechanics is the science of human motion, and an understanding of biomechanical principles is essential if we are to help others to move as efficiently as possible for their current situation. This is what we teach.
e learning : The programme will be provided using a Blended Learning Approach.
Participants initially complete our on-line component in People Moving which they can do at their own pace. They will receive access to on-line course materials via our elearning platform, and the relevant sections will have all necessary materials and a Quiz to be completed at the end. On completion of this element they will be able to print off a People Moving Certificate of Completion. All material is self -directed with on-line tutor support. All lectures have audio voice overs to enhance the learning process, backed up by video and additional learning resources.
Upon completion of the on-line component learners can then attend our Practical Skills Training session (approx. 4 hours) which will apply the principles of human mechanics to movement and participants will then receive a Patient Handling Certificate also.
Practical Skills Training can be delivered on-site at your location particularly for your group, or if it suits your scheduling roster better participants can attend one of our public programmes
