Concussion in Sport

Would you know what to do if somebody suffers a concussion incident while playing sport?

Did you know that the word ‘Concussion’ has its origins in Latin and literally means ‘A Shaking”.

It is categorized medically as a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) caused by Biomechanical forces. This may occur as a result of falls, twists, blows, collisions or tackles. It does not always require a ‘Hit’ to the head, and not all hits to the head result in concussion, yet it is estimated that Globally there 30 to 50 million incidences of Concussion every year.

Most of us have become more aware of concussion in recent years due to the introduction of Head Injury Assessment (HIA) in professional Rugby where up to 25% of all injuries are head injuries, and of these Concussion represents 44% of all head injuries. But, what about other contact sports ?

This programme aims to provide an introduction to Concussion in Sport, how to recognise it pitch side and how to manage it when it happens and throughout the stages of recovery and return to play.

e learning : The programme will be provided using a Blended Learning Approach.

Participants initially complete our on-line component in Concussion in Sport which they can do at their own pace. They will receive access to on-line course materials via our elearning platform, and the relevant sections will have all necessary materials and a Quiz to be completed at the end. On completion of this element they will be able to print off a Concussion in Sport Certificate of Completion. All material is self -directed with on-line tutor support. All lectures have audio voice overs to enhance the learning process, backed up by video and additional learning resources.

Upon completion of the on-line component learners can then attend our Practical Skills Days (approx. 4 hours) where the information learned will be applied in the practical setting.

Practical Skills Training can be delivered on-site at your location particularly for your group, or if it suits your scheduling roster better participants can attend one of our public programmes.
